Community Day
On the 17th of June, 2023 from 9:30am, The Foundation for Green Future Australia will be hosting a community awareness day in Kamay Botany Bay National Park. Partnering with the NSW Environmental Trust, the Foundation is currently working to restore Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub – a pivotal and critically endangered plant community.
Eastern Suburbs Banskia Scrub is an ecological community native to Eastern Sydney consisting of over 16 species native flora such as Banksia aemula, B. ericifolia, B. serrata, Eriostemon australasius, Lepidosperma laterale, Leptospermum laevigatum, Monotoca elliptica and Xanthorrhoea resinifera. The ecological community is home to many different species of native fauna who rely on it for food and shelter. These include possums, lorikeets, and honeyeaters.
The growing issues of land clearing, weed infestation, stormwater run-off and more have devastated the presence of ESBS to less than 3% of its initial coverage across Sydney.
It is with the NSW Environmental Trust’s support and resources that the Foundation for Green Future Australia has been able to undertake our Restoring Eastern Suburbs Banskia Scrub project. We have been working in Kamay Botany Bay National Park, off Henry Head Lane and Walking Track since January this year. Our goal is to restore 2 hectares of bushland to ensure the successful reintegration of ESBS into its natural environment.
As part of our community day, we will be discussing our restoration efforts in further depth, explaining the importance of ESBS specific to the Botany Bay area and a bird expert will be hosting a session to understand the pivotal nature of ESBS as a habitat for native fauna.
